Some fish we regularly catch at Kaikōura.

Here’s an idea of some of the fish we can catch on fishing outings around Kaikōura. If these tickle your fancy, then learn more about our fishing trips, our boat Kai Moana and skipper Ian, or contact us to book a charter.

We’ll fillet and bag any fish you catch, ready to take home and cook.

Crayfish – Technically a crustacean, not a fish, but this tasty spiny rock lobster is one of the most popular delicacies of Kaikōura.

Blue cod – A shallow-water fish found almost exclusively in the South Island of New Zealand. Delicious eating.

Red cod – Lives a little deeper than blue cod. Delicate flesh that is great for smoking or fresh pan frying.

Sea perch – Can get up to 50cm in length. The bigger ones are best for eating, with firm, white fillets.

Tarakihi – A common and very popular fish, commonly served as a premium option in fish ‘n’ chip shops.

Ray’s bream – This mid-water fish has a distinctive rounded head and can be caught at depths of up to 1000m.

Bluenose – One of our favourite fish to catch on the long line. The big fillets are great fried fresh or used in chowder.

Groper – Also known as hāpuku, these delicious fish travel in schools and are very fun to reel in.

Sharks – We don’t usually try to catch these but they get on the line from time to time and make for an exciting catch, including big mako sharks.
